ASHTABULA_An armed robbery suspect was shot and killed by Ashtabula Police about 7:35 p.m.Tuesday after he dragged one officer during a traffic stop on Fort Avenue in Ashtabula. Evan Cox, 26, of Ashtabula, suffered gunshot wounds to both shoulders as he attempted to flee from officers who had stopped his vehicle in the 5400 block of Fort Avenue near Perryville Place.
Cox’s car was spotted by Ashtabula Police on West Prospect Road. The car and driver matched the description of a man suspected in the armed robbery of the Family Video at the intersection of West Prospect Road and Woodman Avenue. Two officers were joined by a third officer during the traffic stop. The injured officer was transported to the Ashtabula County Medical Center. He was treated and released, Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Still said.
All three officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is department protocol in the case of an officer-involved shooting, Stell said said.
Stell declined to identify the officers, saying he did not want to compromise the investigation being conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation. Ashtabula County Coroner’s investigator Tom Despenses told media that three rounds fired by the officer struck the vehicle’s trunk lid; several rounds penetrated the rear window, Despenses said. Cox’s body has been sent to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s office for autopsy.
