“Hess was swimming at the beach with juvenile family members in the rough waters of the lake early Sunday when he shouted that he couldn’t make it back to shore,” Ashtabula County Coroner’s Investigator Tom Despenes said. “Hess’ step-brother tried to rescue him but could not so the step-brother called 911 when Hess went down.”

What began as a rescue attempt became a recovery search when Hess was not found in time to save him. The recovery effort was hindered by unfavorable weather through Sunday night and Monday as well. The large waves battered the divers into a state of exhaustion as they searched for the body. Hess’ body was found in about eight feet of water close to where he initially disappeared from sight Despenes said.

There is a candlelight vigil scheduled for Jake Hess and his family 8 p.m. Thursday at the Conneaut Township Park Beach. It will be held at the bridge on the boardwalk.
