Fire destroys abandoned landmark in Ashtabula

Ashtabula_Ashtabula City Firefighters responded to a fully involved commercial structure fire about 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of west 47th Street and West Avenue in Ashtabula. The former West Elementary School was utilities free and out of use for years. It may have been used for storage. Ashtabula Township and Saybrook Fire responded to the mutual aid call. Community Care Ambulance was also at the scene.

    Spectators gathered on West Avenue at the Arby’s parking lot and on West 47th Street across from the crumbling ruins.

    Firefighters were on the scene for throughout the night.
