Firefighters battle vacant house fire late Tuesday

ASHTABULA_Ashtabula City dispatch received multiple calls about flames shooting from
a second-floor window of a 2.5 story wood-frame house about 10:48 p.m. Tuesday.

    Ashtabula firefighters responded to the scene at 1223 W. 9th Street and saw that the
    fire had spread throughout the second floor of the vacant structure. Ashtabula Township
    responded to the mutual-aid call.

Firefighters dealt with overgrown weeds that surrounded the rundown structure as they
laid down hose lines. The fire was rapidly knocked down and under control in about 20
minutes. Crews spent nearly an hour extinguishing hot spots and hanging fire. Firefighters
were finished with incident about 1:20 a.m. Wednesday.There were no utilities connected
to the abandoned house.

    The two fire departments responded with 14 firefighters and Community Care
    Ambulance had a rescue vehicle at the scene. There were no injuries and the cause of the
    fire is under investigation.
