ASHTABULA_A pregnant woman shot a 16-year-old juvenile in the chest after he and the woman’s estranged boyfriend broke down a door to her apartment Tuesday at Woodman Estates.
The 16-year-old victim and the woman’s boyfriend and father of her unborn child — came to the woman’s apartment in the 5700 block of Woodman Avenue about 2 p.m. following an earlier domestic disturbance. When the mother of two wouldn’t let them in, they reportedly broke down the back door of her apartment about 2 p.m.
“We found the back door kicked in,” Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell said. “He smashed the back door right off the hinges.”
As they headed up the back stairs, the woman reportedly retrieved a small caliber handgun and shot at them, hitting the 16-year-old in the left side of his chest, Stell said.ac ac FBcredit police car lights8881
The men took off before police swarmed the apartment complex and then police received a call from the Ashtabula County Medical Center about a shooting victim arriving at the emergency room.
It is suspected that the juvenile was transported to ACMC in a black Chevy Blazer. The young male was suffering from a puncture lung and eventually was flown to a Cleveland hospital.
The woman has not been charged in the shooting and neither her estranged boyfriend or the 16-year-old has been charged in the break in, but charges are pending according to Chief Stell.
Police were first called to the scene Tuesday morning for a domestic altercation between the woman and her boyfriend. Police allowed the woman’s boyfriend to gather up his belongings and escorted out of the apartment complex and told him to stay away.
“It has been an on-going domestic problem,” Stell said.
Police spent several hours investigating the shooting scene. They also took possession of the handgun and are checking to see who owned it and if there are any restrictions on her owning a gun. Stell said. The incident is still under investigation.
