SHEFFIELD TOWNSHIP_A woman with limited mobility died in a house fire Tuesday at 3238 Griggs Road in Sheffield Township. Betty Janson, 68, was found seated in her bedroom and removed from the house and placed in an ambulance at the scene. Janson was later pronounced deceased. Ashtabula County Coroner’s Investigator Tom Despenes said it appeared that smoke inhalation may be the cause of death pending autopsy results.
A motorist driving past the the two-story wood-frame structure saw smoke pouring from the house and reported the fire to the Sheffield Fire Department. A State of Ohio Fire Marshal was on scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
“The cause of the fire was electrical in nature and started in the kitchen area,” Sheffield Fire Chief Claude Kobernik said. “The victim was home by herself at the time of the fire.” Janson’s son and his girlfriend also lived at the residence.
Fire departments from Kingsville, Monroe, Plymouth and Pierpont responded to the mutual aid call. There were about 20 firefighters battling the fire. Fire crews remained at the scene for about four hours. Chief Kobernik estimated the damage to the structure at $70,000.
