RAM Ashtabula will be the first free RAM clinic held in the State of Ohio

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP_The Ashtabula Towne Square will be the site for the first-ever Remote Area Medical clinic (RAM) held in the State of Ohio. This free medical, dental and vision care event will be held Friday, April 20, Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22 in the former Dillards area of the Towne Square. The set up day is Thursday, April 19.
“This event is primarily geared to serve the uninsured or the under-insured residents of our area and beyond the perimeter of Ashtabula County,” J.P. Ducro IV, Ashtabula County Commissioner and RAM Ashtabula steering committee member, said. “We are very, very excited about the opportunity; this has never been done in the State of Ohio so it’s kind of a cutting edge thing for us. We’ve been working feverishly since the summertime to try to put this together.”
The patient parking lot will open no later than midnight. Numbered patient admission tickets will be given out beginning at 3 a.m., one ticket per patient. Clinic doors will open at 6 a.m. Patients will be admitted in numerical order by ticket number and a ticket is required for admission. Services are provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. Due to time constraints, be prepared to choose between DENTAL and VISION services.
“Kenny Kister with mall has been very, very gracious to donate the space at the old Dillards store, which is where the Bethlehem Experience was held over the Christmas holiday so many of you may attended that,” Ducro said. “It is a great location to hold this event at; hopefully we’re going to find 400 to 500 volunteers coming together to help pull this off and we hope to serve over 1,000 residents that otherwise who may not have access to medical, dental and vision care that is going to be available at this facility.”
Medical services may include annual physical exams, women’s health services, immunizations, diabetes screening and more.
Dental services may include cleanings, fillings and extractions. Vision services may include screenings, eye exams and glasses made on site.
“We’ve been working with J.P., Denise DiDonato, manager, business development, University Hospitals, Ashtabula County, and the rest of the Leadership Team to bring this RAM clinic over a year now. It is a massive undertaking, but it is something that this community desperately needs,” Tina Stasiewski, vice president, business development, Ashtabula County Medical Center, RAM Ashtabula steering committee member, said. “I personally would like to give some credit to John Patterson, our state representative, we have been working very closely with his office to pass legislation that will allow out-of-state licensed medical professionals come and volunteer for our clinic. John has been great to work on this and we’re going to have legislation passed. There is another RAM clinic that will be happening Ohio in August so we’re going to be setting the stage for the success of that clinic as well.”
“It is absolutely critical that all of our people have access to healthcare; be that medical, dental or vision related. The RAM clinic we are hosting will be the first of its kind in all of Ohio. The legislation I am sponsoring with Rep. Sarah LaTourette (R – Chesterland, 76th District) is designed to ease the licensing process for those practitioners who hold a valid license in another state and are volunteering their time at a clinic such as ours so that we will have an adequate number of healthcare professionals on hand,” Patterson (D – Jefferson, 99th District) said.
People of all ages will welcomed at the clinic. No one will be turned away from the clinic. Women’s health will also be focus of the clinic.
“The other piece to this is being able to provide resources and information to those in the community that might not know what resources they do have to get medical care once the RAM clinic is gone; what type of followup resources are available to them because we do really have a lot of great agencies in the community that can connect you with the resources that you need to get the healthcare you need,” DiDonato said. “So, not only is it providing healthcare on that day, but it is also providing information where you can go if you need follow-up health care at no cost or very low cost.”

Answers to frequently asked questions.
RAM offers services on a first-come, first-serve basis; therefore, we do not make appointments.
To enter a clinic you will need a number, and to receive a number you will need to be present when we provide them.
Because our services are free and resources are limited, we only give numbers to those who are physically present at the time of number distribution.
We hand out numbers at the clinic location at 3 am on clinic days. EXAMPLE: If we hold a clinic on January 1st and January 2nd, then we will hand out numbers at 3 am on January 1st and again at 3 am on January 2nd.
We open the parking lot at clinic sites at 12 midnight. Often, folks begin arriving several hours before the parking lot even opens. We can’t tell you a specific time to come, but the earlier you come, the greater your chances of being seen by a doctor.
Volunteer and patient populations determine how many numbers we distribute. For example, if 100 doctors sign up to volunteer, we give out more numbers than we would if only 50 doctors came.
You are not required to bring anything with you. We do not ask for proof of residency or proof of income. Bring all of the medications that you take every day, and take them just like you normally do. Because you will likely wait outside of the clinic site until the clinic begins, we suggest checking weather conditions and preparing accordingly. Since the wait can be a long one, it’s also a good idea to bring food, water, and entertainment like books or games.
